Hello, and welcome to our website on professional writing and rhetoric. Using this site, you will be able to navigate through pages containing the history of the field; philosophies, theories and definitions authored by some of history's greatest thinkers; heuristics that you may use in your own rhetorical process; as well as the applications and social contexts of professional writing.
Additionally, we have provided a list of the sources we used while compiling this web site accompanied with annotations in that case that you may want to research the topics further. Also take note of the Discussion Board, where you may converse with other rhetors or give us feedback on what you would like to see.
Simply stated, rhetoric is the "art of speaking well." For our purposes, however, we will adopt Aristotle's definition of rhetoric, with some slight modifications. That is, for our purposes, we will define professional writing and rhetoric as the "ability in [each] particular case to see the available means of persuasion," focusing not only on the oratory approach, but also on the processes involved and the application of these means through writing and visual design.
